Market looks forward the price decrease for greenhouse tomato and cucumber
Significantly greater volumes of tomato and cucumber are harvested now in the national greenhouses; cucumber from film forcing frames also hits the market. These commodities' supply increases and presses the price down, the Market Information Specialists of the Agricultural Marketing Project inform "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal.
At the same time the supply growth occurred during the holiday period, but the producers took an advantage of the increased demand: they have not declined the prices but even somewhat increased them.
On Tuesday, after the Easter holidays, cucumber and tomato prices fell 15-20% down both on markets and on the producers' farms. The growers forecast the prices to decline further and even more dramatically after the end of May holidays. At the same time, no significant price decrease is likely to happen during May holidays.
Past year on the 26th of April the wholesale tomato price was $2.35/kg, the same as today. It decreased down to $1.76-1.8/kg by mid May.
