Fruits and vegetables grew 50% expensive in average during one year in Ukraine

According to results of wholesale price monitoring on Ukrainian produce markets, conducted by "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal, as of June 14th 2006 major vegetables, fruits and berries have grown significantly expensive during one year.

Early potato is 15-30% more expensive today, past year potato price increased 60-80%. Early white cabbage increased 10-15% in price in Kyiv and Lviv, even though the price for this commodity has not increased and even somewhat declined in the regions-producers. Cauliflower grew significantly expensive; the price increased 20-50%. Bulb onion price increased 40-90% depending from the region.

Carrot price is on the past year level. At the same time, early red beets reduced in price 20-50%.

Cucumbers and tomatoes are more expensive now. The price for greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers is 40-80% higher than a year ago. However, field cucumbers have already hit markets in some regions; the price for this commodity seems to be lower than a year ago. For example, the price for field cucumber has already decreased 40% comparing to past year level in Western Ukraine.

Strawberry is 60-120% more expensive this year. Quality cherry is significantly expensive too; today this commodity costs twice as much than a year ago. Imported apples and peaches are 40-60% more expensive.
