Ukrainian canneries are eager to enter Russian market due to excessive supply of cheap vegetable raw materials
According to information provided by Agricultural Marketing Project to "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal, excessive supply of cheap cucumber and tomato for canning make Ukrainian canneries adjust their plans upward.
To the opinion of Andrey Yarmak, the Deputy Director of the Agricultural Marketing Project, Ukrainian canneries are not willing to waste a favorable opportunity. The thing is, large shipments of cucumbers are available now for a very low price. So canneries are building up processing capacities; however, they often do not have supply contracts for to-be-produced commodities. The expert says, this policy is not so risky as it can be. Speaking about raw materials for canning, the prices for cucumber are very low; prices for tomato are relatively low. For sure, canneries will substantially increase sales on foreign markets, and strengthen positions of Ukrainian producers on Russian market. Some canneries are not able to process all supplied cucumber right now; so they produce cucumber preserves, i.e. semi-processed cucumbers which let the cannery work after the end of cucumber harvesting season.
Growing interest of Ukrainian canneries to Russian market is confirmed by many applications to participate in the first international produce exhibition. The event will be held in Moscow mid October 2006.
