Demand for champignons exceeds supply keeping the prices high

Odesa champignon producers inform about high demand for the mushrooms.

Wholesale price for champignons is $ 2.54-2.74/kg; it is the level of the retail prices observed at the same period of time past year. The retail prices reach $3.13/kg on the central market in Odesa.

The analysts say that the trend of champignon production and consumption growth is observed year by year in Ukraine. As known, mushroom production declines in summer. Medium enterprises cease working: in a hot summer season it is a problem for them to maintain the temperature regime needed for mushroom growth.

The dynamics of production is also influenced by the second factor: quality mushroom compost is in deficit now, to the opinion of market players. In the whole, needed volumes of mushroom compost are produced in Ukraine, but this product is often of poor quality. Some producers have to home-make mushroom compost.

Not only supply is of seasonal character, but the demand for mushrooms too. The demand declines in summer and grows in winter.

A significant production growth is usually observed in the second half of year since fall. It presses retail prices till winter holidays when the demand for mushrooms usually jumps up again.
