Poltava oblast producers plan to increase green pea production next season

The season 2006 was productive for green pea growers in Poltava oblast. An average yield was 40-42 centner/ha, according to information provided by Poltava office of the Agricultural Marketing Project to "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal.

This product is mainly grown on the contract basis for processing needs of Pyryatyn cannery. Professional producers cultivated the total acreage of 190-200 ha; this figure exceeded 45% the records of 2005.

Mr. Petro Redko, the Director of Pyryatyn cannery, says that they plan the increase the green pea production by intensive methods next season. By means of reduction of cultivation areas and lower expenses for field rent, the producers want to purchase green pea seeds of better quality. These seeds proved to be the most productive during two previous years.
