Overproduction threats the world vegetable market
The questions of the world fruit and vegetable market development were in focus of the attention during the first international conference "Produce Business in Russia 2006", as Russian Federation belongs to the world largest importers. In his overview report on world produce market Andriy Yarmak, the Deputy Director of the Agricultural Marketing Project mentioned the fact that world vegetable production develops by significantly faster rates comparing to the world fruit production.
"In 1985 the volume of world vegetable production exceeded only 25% the world fruit production. The disproportion has grown to 45% by 1995, and to 76% by 2006", the expert says. So, world fruit production increased only 60% during 20 recent years; at the same time, vegetable production has grown 2.2. times. To the opinion of A. Yarmak, the world vegetable production will continue growing faster than world fruit production; this situation can soon result in the overproduction of many types of vegetable crops in the world. At the same time, the price trends on world fruit markets will be influenced by poorly satisfied demand in the nearest future. Fruits become positioned as the product for well-to-do persons.
A. Yarmak will describe the situation on world fruit market in details during the third international conference-exhibition "Fruits and Vegetables in Ukraine 2006. Open Market" to be held December 5th -6th 2006 in Kyiv.
