First shipments of imported greenhouse cucumbers from Turkey entered the market

According to information provided by the specialists of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal, first shipments of Turkish greenhouse cucumbers entered Kyiv markets. As a result, the total supply of cucumber has increased, and the prices for this commodity have stabilized respectively.

The specialists say that greenhouse commodities of Turkish origin come to Ukraine through southern regions; however, the definite supply channels are still unknown. To the experts' opinion, Turkish greenhouse cucumber is delivered to our country without import tax and duty payments, so that it is impossible to estimate the supplied volumes. According to the official statistics, large wholesale supplies of greenhouse commodities usually start coming to Ukraine in November. Past year the official data spoke about top record volumes of imported cucumber: 227 tons. However, most specialists are united to think that a larger part of Turkish greenhouse cucumbers was not recorded in the official statistics.

The market players inform that Ukrainian growers of greenhouse produce worry about good marketable appearance of the imported cucumber. As a result, Ukrainian producers of greenhouse cucumber are forced to increase expenses and to pay more attention to sorting procedure on purpose to avoid price decrease for their commodities. To the opinion of the market players, if the supplies of Turkish greenhouse cucumber of the same quality characteristics increase further, the national producers will have to decline price for own commodities in the effort to keep the sales on the previously set level.

"Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal plans to continue informing everybody concerned about the situation development on the greenhouse produce market, as well as the prices for greenhouse commodities on the site www.lol.org.ua and in the journal on daily and weekly basis. There is a block of presentations in the program of the third international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2006. Open Market" which is dedicated to the development perspectives of Ukrainian market of greenhouse vegetables in the conditions of price growth for gas and electricity.
