Kyiv market: does the supply exceeds demand?

The demand for produce grows in line with the demand for other food stuff before the New Year holidays. As a rule, such situation results in the price growth. But, the vendors try to respond to the temporary increase of sales volumes - they increase supplies. According to information provided today by Anatoliy Yarovoy, the Wholesale Price Monitoring Specialist of the Agricultural Marketing Project, the increase of vegetables and fruits is quite obvious on the main wholesale produce market in Kyiv - FARMER market. Despite of the pre-holiday period, the prices have not increased, but even somewhat decreased in many cases.

For example, the prices for cucumbers has declined $0.39-0.58/kg (certain cucumber fractions were sold $2.74-3.13/kg past week and $2.35-2.74/kg this week). The price for tomato remained stable; however, the quality of the supplied product is much better. There is imported pepper for $2.35-2.54/kg; but, greenhouse pepper of Kherson oblast origin is also sold for $0.78/kg. The price for potato has declined $0.03-0.05/kg. The onion price has decreased $0.001-0.01/kg.

The prices for major fruits have not changed. Most apples are supplied for $0.88-1.07/kg; there are also premium segment apples of Greek origin sold for $1.56-1.76/kg. Lots of citrus fruits are offered for sale; Georgian products occupy the lowest price segment. Tangerines of Georgian origin cost $0.78/kg and more. Small shipments of bananas are supplied for $0.94/kg.

Fresh herbs have increased in price the most significantly. Parsley is sold for up to $6.86/kg, dill - $4.9/kg.
