Frosts have not come up to the expectations of the vendors - the prices and the demand level for produce are steady
The players of the produce market of Ukraine inform the specialists of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal that the decrease of the daily temperatures has not resulted in the demand growth for vegetables which was expected earlier. As a result, the prices for vegetables have not been changed a lot too. Some market players are still waiting for the more active demand and price increase. Meanwhile the experts see no reason for the market prices to grow.
To the opinion of Andriy Yarmak, the Deputy Director of the Agricultural Marketing Project, the decreased temperature sets the additional implications for the steadiness of low prices for vegetables, because such weather results in the reduction of losses during the storage period. To the expert's opinion, the price growth for certain types of vegetables is possible only locally if the weather conditions are deteriorated and the transportation of the products is complicated.
Also, to the opinion of A. Yarmak, the temperature decrease adds to the probability of the price drop for such vegetables as carrot, onion and cabbage in April-May 2007. The producers will start to sell out the produce stocks, and first shipments of early vegetables will enter the markets simultaneously during the mentioned period of time.
