German growers of early potato are satisfied with yield and prices
FreshPlaza.com informs about the started harvesting of early potato varieties in Germany. The producers have preliminary estimated that potato yield will be above average this year (up to 40 t/ha). The source informs that potato is of a rather good quality, especially the varieties to be processed into French fries.
At the present moment the commercial potato variety Premiеre is sold for EUR 8.00/centner or around EUR 0.08/kg. The experts think that the prices will decline soon because the medium-early varieties, such as Felsina, are expected to enter markets several weeks earlier than usually.
The prices are also high for early potato varieties sold on freshmarket. In particular, the price for potato of Berber variety 35/65 mm in size fluctuates EUR 14.0-17.5 for 100 kg. For the comparison, CIS produce business periodical ""Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" weekly" informs that the wholesale prices for early potato are twice as high in Ukraine; they reach EUR 0.40/kg. We'd like to remind that the severe deficit for potato was observed in 2006 in Europe, that's why the producers have significantly extended potato acreage by 2007.
