Greenhouse tomato export from Ukraine to Russia let the prices stay high

According to the data of daily wholesale price monitoring on the leading markets of Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Poland, conducted by ""Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", the prices for greenhouse tomatoes this July are on average 30% higher than the prices for greenhouse tomatoes in July 2006.

To the opinion of Andriy Yarmak, the Manager of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" project, this situation is predetermined both by the growing demand for greenhouse tomato from the side of the population of Ukraine, and the growth of export supplies of Ukrainian greenhouse produce to Russian market. The consequent reduction of the cultivation areas of greenhouse tomatoes takes place in Russia; the production of cucumbers, fresh herbs or flowers rather than tomatoes brings more profit in northern regions of the country. Also, it is worth to mention that supermarket chains of Ukraine and Russia fully reject field tomatoes, which are characterized by the shorter shelf life.

Russian produce business specialists think that Ukraine will build up the supplies of greenhouse tomatoes to Russian market in the coming years; Turkey, Uzbekistan, China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Spain will be the main competitors of our country. Ukrainian greenhouse owners can get the key to enter Russian market if they supply the produce of the respective quality, which Russian consumers find worth paying the higher price for.
