Prices for Onion in Ukraine Are Only by 10-15% Higher Than in 2006

According to fruits& vegetables business of CIS countries weekly "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits onion production may be reduced by 13% comparing to that last year, however there are even more pessimistic forecasts at the market now. At the same time, the market operators should always remember about the fact that sown areas for onion this year, according to all estimates, did not at least decrease comparing to the year 2006 and remains record.

Even despite the fact that there has not begun the harvesting of later sorts, prices for this product remain relatively low. On average, the wholesale prices for onion in Ukraine during the current season are 10-15% higher than this time last year. Moreover, one cannot exclude that during mass harvesting of later onion, which is subject to storage, prices are predicted at last year level. Let us remind, that last year sub-purchasers and wholesalers sent prices up to UAH 1.3-1.5 per kilo during harvesting, ignoring the information about the record crop of this culture. As a result, already in January-February prices for onion went down to UAH 0.7-0.9 per kilo.

Note that Polish market, where it is expected the essential growth of onion production this year, has not responded to this information yet, and prices for onion remain relatively high. One may conclude that wholesale prices for large onion in Poland and Ukraine are almost identical. However, Polish farmers and wholesalers think that at the beginning of later onion harvesting, prices for them will start to decrease dynamically.
