Rising Prices for Polish Apple Level Opportunities for Exports for Ukraine and Russia

According to experts regarding fruit & vegetable market monitoring of the weekly "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", prices for apples in Poland are continuing to go up at high rates. Moreover, both apples for processing and dessert apples for sale on fresh market are growing in price. Polish gardeners are delighted with these high prices, especially those of them who were able to store at least part of their harvest.

Nowadays, prices for apples in Poland are the highest for several past years. Never could an apple for processing be sold in this country for UAH 1.5-1.8 recalculated into Ukrainian currency! Those people who deal with processing are now willing to pay these prices. For comparison, in Ukraine the purchasing price for apples subject to processing is wide-ranging: from UAH 0.4 to 1 per kilo.

At the same time, shortage of dessert apples is already being formed at the market. They are sold at the price ranging from UAH 3 to 8 per kilo. Yet, the market lacks acutely apples of good quality, and they are sold, as a rule, at maximum prices. Thus, at Bronishe wholesale market, the average price for a dessert apple is now 2.2 times higher than during the same period of time past year, and the prices for high-quality apples are three times as large.

If apples grew in price at the same rate as now, exports of apples from Poland in Ukraine and Russia, in Andrew Yarmak, project manager of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" would be minimal as even now apple prices in Ukraine and Russia are lower than in Poland. Most shortage of apples at the Ukrainian and Russian markets in winter period will be offset by deliveries from Holland, Italy, France, the United States, also for the Southern Hemisphere countries: Brazil, Argentine, Chile, and South African Republic. Moreover, one cannot exclude the growing supply of apples from Russia to Ukraine from Makedonia and Greece.
