The number of profitable farms in Ukraine may decrease

According to preliminary estimates of agrarian ministry, the number of profitable farms in Ukraine this year may decrease compared to the year before due to unfavourable price situation in the grain market, State Secretary for the Ministry of Agrarian Policy Serhiy Mel'nyk has told a meeting of parliamentary committee for agriculture.

In this connection he emphasised the need of establishing a state agent for grain trade, which would influence prices in periods of their sharp falls or uprises and thus prevent farms from incurring losses.

He said at the moment grain prices were dictated by trans-national corporations.
