China may become the largest supplier of fresh apple to Russia in 2007
According to the forecasts of CIS produce business periodical "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", in 2007, for the first time, China may become the largest supplier of apples to the market of Russian Federation. The country is able to force Holland and Poland out of their leading positions and to upstage such large suppliers as Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Chili and Turkey.
According to the forecasts of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" analysts, the volumes of apple import from China in 2007 may reach the record 450-480,000 tons. In 2006, according to official statistics, around 400,000 tons of apples were supplied from China to Russia. In total, past year Russia imported 2.1 mln. tons of apples; this country is becoming one of the world largest importers of these fruits.
Earlier Poland was the main apple supplier to Russia, upsides with Holland; in 2007 this country will hardly provide significant amounts of these fruits because of the dramatically decreased harvest. Because of the same reason, the price for European apple will significantly increase. We'd like to point out that in 2007 Polish apple was mainly supplied through Lithuania, which has become the main apple supplier to Russia in the first half of the season. That time Lithuania overpaced China, Argentina and Holland. However, Russian authorities are considering the possibility to fully ban the supplies of Polish apples through the third countries.
The leading experts of the industry will speak about the perspectives of apple market, the threats or opportunities presented by China to Russian producers of fruits and vegetables, and about the other important issues of fruit&vegetable business during the second international conference "Fruit&Vegetable Business of Russia 2007. Wealth of New Opportunities", to be held on October 23rd-25th 2007 on the territory of Expocenter in Moscow. To register for the participation in the conference, please fill in this form.
