Pear production will decline in EU and increase in Ukraine
According to information of Ebronisze.pl, the decline of pear production is expected in European Union despite of the record harvests observed in Belgium and Holland. The most prominent production decline is expected in Germany and Eastern European countries. In general, the orchardists of EU-27 plan to harvest 2.43 mln. tons of pears, or 8% as less than in 2006. The production was record high in 2006; that time pear exports from EU amounted to 317,000 tons, and imports amounted to 340,000 tons.
As for varieties, the most considerable decline of pear production is expected for early variety Williams - 14% and Portuguese variety Rocha - 13%. The considerable production decline (-11%) is expected for another two varieties of early pears - Coscia и Gujot. At the same time, the supply of less popular early varieties, such as Santa Maria and Morettini, increases. The production of the popular Conference variety will decline 5%, as well as production of Abace Fetel and Komisowka varieties. Despite of the production decline, EU pear is expected to be of a higher quality.
At the same time, according to the forecast of CIS produce periodical "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" weekly, pear production will increase 24% in Ukraine comparing to the previous year which was characterized by poor harvest. Nevertheless, pear production in Ukraine will be almost twice as low than potentially possible, because unfavorable weather conditions significantly deteriorated the yield and quality of pears.
