Acreage of apple orchards reduces, acreage of pear orchards extends in Holland

Acreage of apple orchards reduced 2% down to 9,560 ha in 2006 in Holland, FreshPlaza.com portal informs, the official information sponsor of the fourth international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2007. Meeting New Leader". At the same time, this source informs, the acreage of pear orchards increased 3% up to 6,910 ha. So, the total acreage of fruit orchards in Holland reached 18,660 ha.

To compare, according to information of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", the total acreage of apple orchards in Ukraine amounts to around 135,000 ha; and, there are 15,000 ha of pear orchards. Some of the large Ukrainian, Russian and Kazakh producers plan to have 3-5,000 ha of intensive apple orchards by 2010 and up to 7-10,000 ha of fruit & vegetable cultivation areas. The average yield of Ukrainian orchards is much lower now than the yield of Dutch orchards; however, the yield is dynamically increasing in our orchards. The average apple yield has increased more than twice during the recent five years in Ukraine.

We'd like to remind that the questions of production, storage, post harvest handling, sorting, packing and marketing of apples will be in focus of attention in the framework of the fourth international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2007. Meeting New Leader" on the 4th-6th of December 2007 in Kyiv on the territory of the National Complex "Expocenter of Ukraine". In particular, all conference participants will have an opportunity to see the novelties of the technologies of apple orchard protection from frosts, drip irrigation systems and monitoring of orchard condition, modern approaches of orchard diseases and pests control, advanced sorting machines for apples, "Phytomag" technology (it let preserve the produce quality even in the storages which are not equipped with CA systems), approaches to the construction of modern fruit and vegetable storages and many other issues. Naturally, all producers will take an advantage to meet with the leading apple buyers from Ukraine and other countries, to learn about the forecast of market development, and the experience exchange with the colleagues.
