What will be the influence of the cancellation of banned imports of Polish fruits & vegetables on Ukrainian and Russian markets?
The international mass media have repeatedly informed that the Chiefs of veterinary services of Russia and Poland plan to sign a memorandum on the 19th of December. This memorandum will cancel the over than two-year ban for the supplies of Polish meat. The ban was imposed as a consequence of Russia's claims to Polish meat quality and origin. Also, to the experts' opinion, a significant progress has been traced in the negotiations on the cancellation of banned supplies of fruits and vegetables of Polish origin. We can admit the possibility that this ban will be cancelled too in the coming months.
Russian importers of fruits and vegetables inform the specialists of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" weekly that the cancelled ban for the supplies of Polish vegetables, fruits and berries let them increase the efficiency of imports and extend the assortment, so that the prices in lower price segment will decline. The importers hope much that the supplies will be unblocked till January when the season of active exports of Polish apple and pear to Russia traditionally starts. Of course, despite of banned imports, Russian importers worked actively with Polish produce. However, this kind of process was more expensive and less attractive to both parties.
The cancelled ban for the imports of fruits and vegetables will undoubtedly cheer up Russian importers. But, it will have negative influence on the produce market of Ukraine in general. Primarily, if the ban is cancelled till the end of year this season, the competition for apple will become severe between Russian and Ukrainian buyers starting from January. This situation will immediately lead to the price growth for this fruit on Ukrainian market. Next season Ukrainian farmers will also have serious competitor on Russian market of onion, early vegetables and other types of fruits and vegetables. This fact will press the prices of Ukrainian producers down.
