Tomato cultivation areas are extended in the world due to the increased acreage in summer greenhouses
The management of Syngenta company informed the specialists of "Fruit-Inform" project, the extension of tomato cultivation areas has been happening in the world mainly due to the increased acreage of the greenhouse tomatoes. The most part of the increase occurs due to the greater number of the so-called passive (or summer) greenhouses which are not heated. To the opinion of the company's experts, the main reason for the acreage to extend exactly in the summer greenhouses is the possibility to guarantee the quality products with the minimal energy expenses. There is no secret that the prices for energy are increasing by very high rates in the world, so that the production of the vegetables in the capital glass greenhouses is unfeasible in the northern regions. At the same time, the consumers still demand the quality and relatively inexpensive products all year round. That's why the southern regions get the significant advantages to compete. Moreover, the globally changing climate has a great impact on this trend too. The field tomatoes are much more vulnerable to the weather conditions; at the same time, the greenhouse tomatoes do not actually depend on the climatic abnormalities.
