Ukraine: what is going on with the prices for onion?

According to the forecast of the specialists of the CIS fruit & vegetable business weekly "Fruit-Inform" project, this year Ukraine sees substantial increase of bulb onion production. Despite the fact that at the moment the harvesting campaign of early varieties of onion is being in progress, the prices for onion continue decreasing and demand for it at the prices close to maximal is estimated by the producers as very low. During the recent month, the average wholesale prices for onion in Ukraine almost doubled. Currently, to purchase high-quality onion from the producers is possible at the prices of $0.23-0.37/kg. Therefore, the prices for this product in Ukraine are for a quarter lower as compared to the same data last year. The mass harvesting of middle and late varieties of onion will start in the second half of August, when substantial decrease of the average wholesale prices is expected. We should mention that this year Ukraine has imported the record volumes of onion and almost did not export it. During the first five months, nearly 25.000 tonnes of bulb onion were supplied to Ukraine mainly from Azerbaijan and Poland. Belarus, Russia, Holland, Egypt, Turkey and Georgia supplied large lots of onion to Ukraine. According to the forecasts of "Fruit-Inform", in new season Ukraine will export onion. Let us remind that detailed information about prospects of production, export, import and prices for onion and other vegetables and fruits in new season will be presented to all participants of the Fifth International Conference "Vegetables and Fruits of Ukraine 2008"".
