Ukraine: prices for onion remain stable

The onion market will not see a bullish trend in future, at that further decrease is expected, reported Tatiana Getman, editor-in-chief of “Agrooglyad: vegetables and fruits” during the Fifth international conference “Vegetables and fruits of Ukraine – 2008” in Kiev.

According to Getman, significant extension of sown area under this crop by 16 % is the main reason of reduction in prices. At the same time, volumes of onion production increased by 19%.

At the moment, despite low prices for onion, demand remains minimal due to low quality as a result of moisture surplus that is caused by heavy rains during the harvesting period.

Also, this price decrease is caused by the fact that large volumes of onion were laid for storing.

As Getman noted, the other important factor is the exchange course of national currency. In the case of decrease of hryvnya course to dollar, import shipments will be stopped that will have an impact on prices.
