Onion growers prefer drip irrigation
The results of surveys of professional onion producers in Ukraine within the fundamental research "Onion of Russia and Ukraine - 2009. Situation and developing prospects of production, trade and processing" show that in 2009 most farmers who used overhead irrigation, plan to shift for drip irrigation.
Producers reckon that using of overhead irrigation for onion growing does not cover additional expenses and let to grow the produce of necessary quality. At the same time, despite high expenses, drip irrigation let the producers to increase onion yield with guarantee of high quality that reflects in higher price.
Most professional onion producers also plan to expand areas of modern storages, however, they worry about possible cost increase of equipment for storing, handling and packing of onion.
The detailed information about development prospects for the new season, prices for onion and cost price of growing, novelties in growing technologies, handling and storing of onion will be discussed during the First international specialized conference "Onion of Ukraine - 2009" , which will be held on February , 10, 2009 within the exhibition "Kiev AgriHort - 2009". The first-rate producers and purchasers of onion and leading suppliers of equipment and machinery for production, handling, storing and onion packing will participate in the conference.
