Ukrainian farmers not able to store onion

The first results of fundamental research ”Onion of Russia and Ukraine – 2009. Situation and developing prospects of production, trade and processing” indicate serious difficulties with onion storing that Ukrainian producers had to face. According to the specialists, the main reason is that most producers can not organize the storing process in the right way despite the dynamic increase of modern storages volumes.

While organizing the storing process, Ukrainian farmers study the experience of Poland and Netherlands, but climate conditions of these countries differ from the conditions of main production conditions of Ukraine. As a result, farmers in these countries chose different varieties and onion hybrids that need a special storing method. This way, quality losses of onion during storing in Ukraine are significantly higher, compared to Poland or Netherlands.

The information about ways of quality loss avoiding during the onion storing and methods of effective storing in the conditions of Ukraine will be represented during the First international specialized conference ”Onion of Ukraine – 2009” , which will be held on February , 10, 2009 within the exhibition “Kiev AgriHort – 2009”. First-rate producers and purchasers of onion and leading suppliers of equipment and machinery for production, handling, storing and onion packing will participate in the conference.
