Ukraine asked Russia for meat quota
Ukraine applied to Russian Federation with a request to set a quota for import of meat despite the fact that quoting of beef and pork imports by Russia is not applicable to CIS countries. The information was delivered by Ukraine's Minister of Agrarian Policy Serhiy Ryzhuk.
The Ministry's experts say Ukrainian party in such a way wants to guarantee future sales of meat to RF. They said this year they would be able to supply to that country not less meat than the year before - 139,000 tonnes.
Ryzhuk said Ukraine would like to have a beef quota at about 130,000 tonnes, a quota for chicken meat at 15,000 tonnes and a quota for butter at 60,000 tonnes. He said the corresponding proposals had been already submitted to Russian government.
In 2002 Ukraine supplied to Russia about 115,000 tonnes of beef. The share of Ukrainian beef in the structure of Russian import was 24 percent. Ukrainian beef was sold at the Russian market at prices, close to those of Russian producers.
Quota for import of beef to Russian Federation in 2003 will be 315,000 tonnes, for import of pork - 337,500 tonnes. The quotas take effect since April 1.
