Kazakhstan's livestock sector expands

According to web-resource Gazeta.kz, gross output of agricultural products in Kazakhstan in January-July this year was worth 156.2 billion tenges (146 tenges = $1), which is 1.4 percent more than in the same period last year.

According to Kazakhstan's statistics committee, as of August 1 this year there was registered a growth in the numbers of animals and poultry in all categories of farming businesses as compared with the same date of 2002. The growth in the head of livestock has been achieved predominantly on account of private peasant households and private farmers. Thus, the head of cattle increased over the period 6.6 percent, reaching 5.565 million, of sheep and goats - 8.6 percent, to 14.828 million, of pigs - 12.7 percent, to 1.721 million, of horses - 4.9 percent, to 1.202 million, of poultry - by 2.8 percent, to 28.461 million.

The statistic agency informed that production of meat in January-July 2003 increased 4.3 percent from the same period last year and reached 584,600 tonnes, production of milk grew 5.1 percent - to 2.664 million tonnes, the number of produced eggs (1.441 billion) was 13.2 percent larger.
