Growth of prices for fruits and vegetables in Ukraine significantly slower in October 2010 than in 2009.
Fruit and vegetable index of Fruit-Inform shows that cost of fruit and vegetable basket of a Ukrainian consumer grew by 8% within October 2010. Whereas, within October of the last year, the same set of fruits and vegetables increased in price by 25%.
As to analysts of Fruit-Inform, decrease of seasonal growth of prices for fruits and vegetables is explained with prices to have reached very high levels already in August-September. Due to this fact, their further growth was difficult. As a result, notwithstanding even slower rates of growth in October, cost of fruit and vegetable basket of a Ukrainian consumer as of November 2010 was higher by 38% than as of the same period of 2009.
We may also note that, during the last year, a significant contribution to growth of prices was made by flu panic, resulted in sharp increase of demand for citrus fruits and price hike for them.
