Wholesale prices for fruits and vegetables in Russia are 30% higher than in Ukraine

As to information of analysts of Fruit-Inform, prices for fruit and vegetables produce in Russia are currently 30% higher than in Ukraine.

The largest difference in prices is registered for group of traditional vegetables and potatoes for storage. Averagely, prices for this group of vegetables in Russia are 49% higher than in Ukraine. Russian consumers spend averagely 20% more for glass-grown vegetables and 11% more for fruits.

The largest difference in prices for vegetables is registered for carrots and beets that are higher in price in Russia than in Ukraine by 90% and 65% respectively. This is mainly a result of unfavorable climate conditions of the last year forcing Russian importers to seek for suppliers abroad already now. Prices for potatoes in Russia are 1.5-fold higher than in Ukraine, prices for cabbage – higher by one third. Nevertheless, imported fruits, such as citrus fruits and bananas, in Russia are averagely 10-20% lower than in Ukraine. This is connected with problems at Ukrainian customs, which we have already been repeatedly covering in our publications. As for apples, they are considerably lower in price in Ukraine than in Russia.

Supplies of vegetables and fruits from Ukraine to Russia are duty-free. So, large difference in prices creates opportunities for export supplies of produce from Ukraine to Russia. As of today, as to our opinion, the largest opportunities exist in supplies of apples from Ukraine to the Russian market, as wholesale prices for apples in Russia are almost 2-fold higher than in Ukraine.

Leading Russian importers are already actively working at the Ukrainian market concerning apples. Some of them have already booked participation in trading forum that will be held in course of the seventh international conference “Vegetables and Fruit of Ukraine-2010”. This event will take place at “Ekspotsentr Ukrainy”, Kiev, Ukraine, on December 1-2, 2010. On-line registration for participation in the conference will be accessible within a week through this link.
