Russia intensifying imports of citrus fruits from Turkey, prices jacking up
As to Fruit-Inform Project, Russia sharply increased purchase of citrus fruits from Turkey. This resulted in growth of prices for them at Turkish market. According to Ukrainian market specialists, this also caused stoppages of supplies of tangerines to Ukrainian market.
At the same time, there are little alternatives to Turkish tangerines at Ukrainian market, so great hopes are set on Georgian produce. Also, according to Fruit-Inform Project, this year tangerine production in Georgia will be approximately 2-fold lower that in 2009 and will not exceed 70,000 tonnes. And this means Ukraine will hardly manage to import more than 20,000-25,000 tonnes from Georgia against 38,000 tonnes imported in the previous year.
Tangerines from Spain and Italy present at Ukrainian market are sold in higher price category, while this year Ukrainian consumers' incomes continue to be extremely low. At the same time, supplies of tangerines from Pakistan keep on growing, but they are not able to compete with Turkish tangerines adequately.
