For the first time a large consignment of Northern Irish potatoes was shipped to Russia
BBC informed of the first large consignment of potatoes from Northern Ireland to be shipped to Russia. This week, more than 2,000 tonnes of potatoes were shipped from Lisahally port towards Saint Petersburg port.
As the source was quoted to say, most of potatoes shipped to Russia are of varieties unknown to Russian consumer, such as Rooster, Kerr's Pink, British Queen, and Navan.
Northern Irish farmers were very satisfied with this export operation, as prices for potatoes grew by one third due to it. Moreover, exports will not have a particular effect on domestic supplies, as potato crop was rather good in this region.
More detailed information of potato business is available in the fundamental study “Potato business of Russia and Ukraine-2010. Situation and prospects of development”, which was conducted by Fruit-Inform Project.
