Niche specialization is the most important component of success in the potato business of Ukraine
Ukraine is among top-4 potato producers in the world and one of the biggest potato consumers. This was said by Sergey Rybalko, President of Ukrainian Potato Association, during his speech at the third international conference “Potato and Vegetables of Ukraine-2011”.
According to him, niche specialization of potato industry companies must become the most important step in the Ukrainian potato business development. “Many developed countries prohibit seed potato producers from growing of ware potatoes. Such global experience would be very useful for our market”, Mr. Rybalko noted.
Andriy Yarmak, Head of Fruit-Inform Project, thinks potato production in the season 2011/12 may be very risky business in Ukraine. Already now, due to sharp seed potato price growth, ware potato production has high prime cost. So the expected production growth may lead to dramatic price decrease.
