Prices for imported fruits much lower in Russia than in Ukraine
Data of the daily wholesale price monitoring conducted by Fruit-Inform Project show that the difference between prices for imported fruits in Ukraine and Russia has considerably increased over recent weeks. As of today, Russian consumers pay averagely 20% less for imported tropical fruits than Ukrainian ones.
The greatest difference in prices is for bananas and lemons which cost 30% less in Russia than in Ukraine. As to citrus fruits, they are averagely 16% lower in price. However, apple prices are 25-30% higher in the Russian Federation than in Ukraine, because the latter still disposes of small volumes of the domestic produce. At the same time, there are already no domestic apples in the Russian market for almost a month.
We should also mention a recent growth of demand for garden strawberries in Russia. Prices for strawberries are 10-20% higher than in Ukraine as the Ukrainian market disposes of the domestic produce.
Ukrainian producers of garden strawberries, sweet cherries, and other berries expect to have a good harvest in 2011; however, these plans will be fully announced only after May 8-10, when a threat of spring frosts will finally disappear in Ukraine. Fruit-Inform Project is already working on the new production and price forecast, the berry part of which will be presented during the Second International Conference “Berries of Ukraine-2011: Freezing and Fresh Market”. The conference is to take place in Lvov, Ukraine, May 19-20, and will be visited by the biggest producers of berries from all regions of Ukraine.
Application form for participation in the conference is available here.
