Russia: sharp fall of fruit and vegetable prices over last week
Fruit-Inform Project's Russian fruit and vegetable index shows that fruits and vegetables have decreased in price by 10.4% at once in Russia over last week that is the record-breaking weekly decrease of prices in 2011. The fall of prices was registered for all categories of produce: greenhouse vegetables, traditional vegetables, potatoes, and fruits. The cost of fruit and vegetable basket of Russian consumers is currently 8% lower than as of late February, although is much higher than last year.
According to Fruit-Inform Project, traditional vegetables and potatoes became 6% cheaper last week. Onions and potatoes were decreasing in price, beets – increasing. Fall of prices for greenhouse vegetables was the sharpest as they became 30% cheaper thanks to growth of supply of the domestic produce.
Fruit basket decreased in price by 4.7% notwithstanding further slight increase of prices for apples which are now almost exclusively imported. At the same time, other fruits (bananas, mandarins, oranges, and lemons) fell in price.
