Fruit and vegetable prices are again record-breaking in Ukraine during Easter holidays

Fruit and vegetable index of Fruit-Inform Project shows that a new record of year-on-year growth of fruit and vegetable prices was registered last week, as fruits and vegetables have increased in price by 14.8% at once. Moreover, Ukraine's fruit and vegetable prices have already increased by 19% over first three weeks of April. However, analysts of Fruit-Inform Project predict fruits and vegetables may decrease in price already this week.

Potatoes made the greatest contribution to last week's growth of fruit and vegetable prices, as they increased in price by 22% at once. Greenhouse vegetable price growth was even sharper (by 27%), but their influence on the situation was less sensible due to smaller share in consumption volume.

We should also mention the overall 16.6% increase of borsch vegetable (onion, cabbage, beet, carrot) prices last week. It was the first time this year when prices increased for all these products.

Fruit price growth was the least last week, and, due to sharp increase of apple and banana prices, fruits increased in price by 3.7%. The only product to have decreased in price were garden strawberries, which have fallen in price by 18% last week. However, strawberry consumption remained quite low and had no significant influence on overall fruit and vegetable price situation.

More detailed information about berry season prospects and new market niches in this dynamically growing sector will be included in speeches of leading experts of this business during the Second International Conference “Berries of Ukraine-2011: Freezing and Fresh Market”.
