Russia's ban on vegetable imports from EU can provoke increase of prices for early vegetables in Ukraine
Russia's ban on vegetable imports from the EU may provoke significant rise of prices for early vegetables in Ukraine. According to Fruit-Inform Project, markets of the EU, Russia and Ukraine are rather closely interconnected so such a decision will certainly have an effect on each of three participants of fruit and vegetable business. On the one hand, this ban means a loss of one of the most important target markets for European farmers. On the other hand, it, on the contrary, gives Ukrainian producers an opportunity to sell their produce at higher prices.
First of all, we should expect rise of prices for early potatoes, cabbage and root vegetables. In June-July Russia imports from the EU more than 30% of all early potatoes and almost 25% of all early table beets. 20% of all cabbage imports also comes from the EU countries. At the same time, last year Ukraine was among top-three major suppliers of early cabbage to Russia.
