Fruit and vegetable prices keep on decreasing in Ukraine notwithstanding bad weather

Fruit-Inform Project's fruit and vegetable index shows that fruit and vegetable prices decreased by 6.2% last week, after more than 12% fall a week earlier. Deceleration of the price reduction rate was experienced due to rainy weather that led to decrease in the supply of early vegetables and berries.

In such a way, fruit and vegetable prices have been decreasing in Ukraine for the seventh week in a row. And within this period, they have already fallen by more than one third.

Last week the most significant contribution to the fruit and vegetable price reduction was made by early vegetables thanks to one third fall of tomato prices. The borsch vegetable (onion, cabbage, beet, carrot) price reduction amounted to 20-25% last week. At the same time, potato prices increased due to stoppage of harvesting as a result of rainy weather.

Fruit prices increased by 3% due to growth of berry prices as a result of bad weather, the end of the sweet cherry and strawberry marketing seasons and more expensive berry crops and summer stone fruits having entered the market. Stone fruits had a negative influence on the consumption of citrus, bananas and apples, and the demand for these fruits kept on decreasing.
