Ukraine: record low apple imports in September 2012
According to State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in September 2012, Ukraine imported only 194 tonnes of apples that was the lowest volume in the past 8 years.
A decrease in imports was connected with the abundant supply of domestic apples in the country. Poland and the Netherlands traditionally were the leaders in apple exports to Ukraine in September with their aggregate share amounting to 70% in Ukraine's total imports.
The demand for imported apples is not high now, as competition with domestic produce is rather serious. Imported apples are purchased mainly by big retail chains with the purpose of widening their assortment of apple varieties.
