US pear production to decrease sharply
According to USDA estimates, US pear production will decrease by 10% to 796,000 tonnes in the season 2012/13. The largest part of this crop will be sold in the internal market, while the rest will be exported to traditional destinations such as Canada and Mexico.
A significant decrease in domestic production will most likely lead to considerably higher imports in the season 2012/13. According to preliminary estimates, US pear imports will grow by 20% to 75,000 tonnes with Chile and Argentina remaining the leaders in exports of these fruits to the USA.
