A further increase in Ukrainian fresh produce price index
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index continued to grow last week. In particular, from December 15 to 21, 2012, the price index became 14.5% higher that was the sharpest week-on-week increase rate in the current season. In the aggregate, the Ukrainian fresh produce price index has grown by a third since early December.
“As we have forecast, prices of traditional vegetables increased immediately after first frosts. Such a trend remained in effect last week, and the price index of traditional vegetables (onions, cabbage, beetroots, carrots) and potatoes became 21.2% higher”, said Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “The highest increase rate was registered in prices of cabbage (20%) and potatoes (22%). In addition, beetroots and greenhouse vegetables became more expensive too”.
The price index of fruits became 1.5% higher in Ukraine due to irregular shipments of certain fruit categories in view of difficult weather conditions.
As regards further fruit and vegetable price prospects in the country, Fruit-Inform experts expect slower increase in prices of potatoes and traditional vegetables, but faster growth of the demand for fruits that may lead to their higher prices.
