Russia and Ukraine keep on increasing frozen potato imports

According to Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation, in the first 5 months of the season 2012/13, Russia imported 34,400 tonnes of frozen potatoes that was 16% higher year-on-year.

The Russian Federation should also be noted as the country that has been steadily increasing frozen potato imports over the past 6 seasons. For example, in the season 2006/07 Russia had imported no more than 34,000 tonnes of this product, while in the season 2011/12 imports were doubled and reached 71,000 tonnes.

Poland and the Netherlands remain the leaders in frozen potato exports to Russia with the shares of 70% and 23%, respectively.

The same trend has been observed in Ukraine over the past 4 seasons. According to Fruit-Inform, in the season 2008/09 Ukrainian companies had imported just 1,500 tonnes of frozen potatoes, while in the season 2011/12 imports amounted to 4,400 tonnes. Poland is the main supplier with the share of 60% in Ukraine's total imports, while the share of the Netherlands reaches 25%.
