Russia: carrot prices double year-on-year

According to Fruit-Inform analysts, the demand for carrots is the highest among all categories of traditional vegetables (onions, cabbage, beetroots, carrots) in Russia.

Carrot prices have already started growing before New Year holidays. Moreover, trade has been picking up in the past two weeks too. Higher prices are connected with limited stocks of high-quality carrots in Russian farms, as carrot production was rather modest in the country in 2012. Originally, farmers planned to sell this produce up to April, but, according to the latest estimates, many farms' stocks will be depleted by early spring under conditions of active sales.

In such a way, Russian growers hope for a further increase in carrot prices, while Ukrainian market participants expect a good opportunity for export.

Current ex-farm prices of Russian carrots have almost doubled year-on-year. For example, carrots are sold at RUB 9-12/kg (EUR 0.22-0.30/kg) in the southern regions, while in 2012 prices varied between RUB 4-8/kg (EUR 0.10-0.20/kg).

As regards the Ural and Siberian regions, farmers currently sell carrots at RUB 8-9/kg (EUR 0.20-0.22/kg). In January of 2012, carrots were sold at RUB 3.50-7.00/kg (EUR 0.09-0.17/kg) there.

Carrot prices in the Volga region average RUB 10/kg (EUR 0.25/kg) compared with RUB 3.50-6.00/kg (EUR 0.09-0.15/kg) in the same period of the previous year.

In the central regions, carrots are sold at RUB 8-10/kg (EUR 0.20-0.25/kg) that is also two times higher year-on-year.

As regards the Ukrainian carrot market, more information about it will be presented at the 5th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2013”, Kiev, Ukraine, February 19-20, 2013.
