Decrease of 27% in Ukrainian fresh produce price index in May

Fruit-Inform's fresh produce price index shows continuous price reduction in the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market.

In the period from May 25 to 31, fruits and vegetables became 3.9% less expensive in the country. In such a way, the Ukrainian fresh produce price index decreased by 27% in May.

“A seasonal decrease in fruit and vegetable prices in the second half of May is traditionally observed in Ukraine. Consumers' preferences also sharply change in this period with cucumbers, tomatoes, early cabbage, lettuce and herbs as well as strawberries and sweet cherries accounting for larger share in consumption, while purchases of potatoes, traditional vegetables, apples, citrus fruits and bananas are significantly lower”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Last week greenhouse vegetables, potatoes, bananas and sweet cherries made the largest contribution to a decrease in the fresh produce price index in Ukraine”.

Availability of still large stocks of last year's white cabbage, which continued to become less expensive, should also be noted. At the same time, early white cabbage kept on growing in price due to lower supply. Prices of last year's traditional vegetables were under the influence of growing supply of early produce; however, they were stable in the majority of cases.

We would remind you that more information about current developments and future prospects in the Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly service package.
