Russia to continue to reduce imports of traditional vegetables from EU
According to Fruit-Inform, Russia has halved imports of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) over the past 2 seasons, and potato imports have become 5 times lower. In addition, Russia's imports of traditional vegetables and potatoes in the current season is expected to be the lowest over the past 6 years.
“Lower imports of traditional vegetables and potatoes are connected with booming growth of their production in Russia and serious investments in produce storage, handling and packaging infrastructure in 2008-2012”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Keeping on intently studying the Russian fruit and vegetable market development, we can forecast that Russia will have no need in cabbage and beetroot imports in 5 years and sharply reduce imports of onions, carrots and potatoes thanks to the internal production development”.
As the EU currently accounts for the largest share in Russia's imports of traditional vegetables and potatoes, suppliers from the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, France, Germany and other EU countries should start seeking for alternative markets for their produce already now. Russia's growing internal production will also affect Ukrainian suppliers, who have been actively increasing exports to Russia in the past few seasons.
We would remind you that more detailed information about Russia's fruit and vegetable imports structure and outlook will be presented at the 6th International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2013”, which is to take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 17.
