Ukraine: potato prices drop by a third over three weeks

According to Fruit-Inform, potato prices have dropped by a third over the past three weeks in Ukraine. For comparison, a decrease in potato prices in the same period of the previous season amounted just to 1%. Nevertheless, potato prices are still significantly higher year-on-year.

“Wholesale prices for potatoes are 170% higher year-on-year in the southern regions and 80% higher in the western regions. Potato prices in Kiev are averagely twice as high”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “The lowest prices of potatoes are registered in the western regions: in Volyn and Lviv regions, potatoes can be purchased even at UAH 1.40-1.80/kg (EUR 0.13-0.17/kg). Growers from Kherson region (southern part of Ukraine) sell potatoes at no lower than UAH 2.50/kg (EUR 0.24/kg).

Current potato price levels are one of the highest over the past few years. However, harvesting of late potatoes accounting for the largest part of production is to start only in September.
