Ukrainian onion market to depend on imports
Fruit-Inform experts believe that availability of imported produce will intensify its impact on the Ukrainian onion market.
For the present, Polish farmers are highly interested in onion exports to Ukraine due to availability of large volumes of Dutch onions in Poland preventing them from raising prices. In view of that, any attempt of Ukrainian growers to increase their prices may lead to higher imports from Poland and other countries.
At the same time, prices of domestic onions are still higher than the price levels of imported produce in Ukraine. Polish onions are currently smuggled to the territory of Ukraine. Polish farmers fix export prices at 0.24-0.25, and prices of smuggled Polish onions vary between 0.41-0.42 euro/kg in Ukraine. Ukrainian growers offer onions at 0.42-0.46 euro/kg, which is 5 times as high as in late January 2013.
We would remind you that in the shortage season 2010/11 Poland was the second (after Egypt) largest exporter of onions to Ukraine with the share of 30% in Ukraine's total onion imports. In the current season Poland is again the second largest exporter with Russia being the leader and accounting for about 50% in Ukraine's total onion imports. Furthermore, real volumes of onions imported from the Russian Federation may be significantly higher as up to January Russian onions were smuggled to Ukraine in the majority of cases.
We would remind you that more detailed information about the current state and future developments in the Ukrainian market for onions, other vegetables and potatoes will be presented at the 6th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014”, which will be held on February 20, 2014, President Hotel, Kiev, Ukraine.
