Ukraine: no damage to apple orchards from cold spell in May

A cold spell registered in Ukraine on May 5-7 has inflicted significant damages to stonefruit and berry crops in some regions. Nevertheless, Ukrainian growers say of almost no impact of a cold spell on apple orchards.

“Most considerable cold spell was registered in the western regions of Ukraine”, a grower comments. “Surface temperature sometimes went down to 3-5 degrees below zero in those regions and inflicted serious damages to early strawberry crop. Nevertheless, air temperature was not so low, therefore apple trees suffered slightly”.

However, Ukrainian growers say of some impact of a cold spell on apple trees: abundant rainfall hampered normal flight of bees that has resulted in insufficient pollination.
