Ukraine leads in imports of onions from Russia

Ukraine was the leader in imports of Russian onions in the season 2013/14, according to Fruit-Inform.

According to the official statistics, Russia shipped record high 103 tons of onions to Ukraine in the previous season. Furthermore, Ukraine accounted for about a half of Russia's total onion exports with imports peaking in autumn and December.

However, Fruit-Inform analysts assess real exports of Russian onions to Ukraine to have been 3.5-4 times as high as the official data. Significant volumes of onions were smuggled from the southern regions of Russia, which enabled Russian produce to successfully compete with domestic onions in Ukraine.

It should be noted that onion prices reached record high in Ukraine in December 2013 and were 6 times as high as in the end of 2012. Moreover, Ukrainian growers offered onions at prices almost twice as high as registered in other European countries in December last year that was rather attractive for suppliers from the Netherlands, Poland and Russia.

More detailed information about the Eastern European onion market developments will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia-2014», which is to be held on September 16, in conjunction with the largest food exhibition in Russia WorldFood Moscow 2014.
