Moldovan apple growers manage to finish season at high prices despite Russia's embargo
Despite Russia's ban on imports, Moldovan apple growers have managed to finish their season at high prices.
Exporters say of almost fully exhausted stocks now in Moldova. Growers were ready to ship their remaining quantities at 0.44-0.51 euro/kg, depending on variety, three times as high as registered in late May 2014 (0.16-0.27 euro/kg).
Such high prices registered in the end of the season are connected with shortage of supply in the Moldovan market. In view of the ban on imports introduced by Russia, previously the largest export market for apples from Moldova, the majority of Moldovan growers took a decision not to keep their crop in storage and adhered to ex-works sales. As a result, Moldovan farms' apple stocks were exhausted averagely a month earlier than usual.
We would remind you that Rosselkhoznadzor (Russia's veterinary and phytosanitary watchdog) has introduced a ban on imports of Moldovan fruits on July 21, 2014. The ban was connected with multiple violations of international and Russian requirements to shipments of Moldovan plant products registered by Rosselkhoznadzor. Russia has previously been the largest export market for Moldovan apples. According to the official statistics, the Russian Federation has annually accounted for up to 80% of Moldova's total apple exports.
