Ukraine: pear prices sharply fall in Khmelnytskyi

Sellers from Dubovo Wholesale Market, Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, say of a collapse in pear prices.

Now they vary between UAH 45-48/kg (USD 1.96-2.09/kg), depending on variety, quality and country of origin, against reaching UAH 60/kg (USD 2.78/kg) in the beginning of the previous week. The market participants have to reduce their prices due to weaker demand for pears in Ukraine. As a rule, buyers prefer seasonal berries and fruits, while pears are purchased mainly by supermarket chains to widen their assortment.

However, despite a sharp fall in prices, they are still 43% higher year-on-year due to the devaluation of the national currency in Ukraine. At the same time, prices in the USD equivalent have fallen by 25% compared with the previous year.
