Ukraine: watermelon prices reach last year's levels
Watermelon prices continue gradually going down in Ukraine despite stable export demand, according to Fruit-Inform.
Farms' current prices have slightly changed year-on-year and now vary between UAH 1.30-1.80/kg (USD 0.05-0.07/kg). We would remind you that high-quality watermelons were offered at UAH 1.60-2.00/kg (USD 0.13-0.16/kg) in early August 2014, and the supply of low-quality produce offered at UAH 1.20-1.30/kg (USD 0.10-0.11/kg) was rather high.
It should be noted that farmers now face serious problems with maintaining prices at last year's levels due to a year-on-year increase in watermelon supply and sometimes unsatisfactory quality of produce.
Fruit-Inform expects the Ukrainian watermelon production to be at least 8% higher in the current season with growers being able to maintain prices at last year's levels only under conditions of stable exports. Fruit-Inform analysts believe that watermelon prices would be at least 20% lower year-on-year in case of problems with shipments for export.
