Poland: apple exports reach record high

Poland has significantly raised its apple exports in July 2014 – April 2015, according to EuroStat data.

Despite pessimistic expectations, Polish exporters managed to ship almost 1.2 mln tons of apples, an increase of 33% year-on-year. For comparison, exports reached just 883,000 tons in the same period of the previous season.

It should also be noted that Polish suppliers had to cardinally change their export geography after Russia's ban on imports of European foodstuffs.

As a result, thanks to an increase of 80% in imports, Belarus became the leader in imports of Polish apples with the share of 26% in Poland's total exports. At the same time, the market analysts estimate almost a half of those volumes to have been re-exported to the Russian Federation as Belarusian apples.

Germany ranked second with imports reaching 193,000 tons, two and a half times as high as registered a year before.

Ukraine was the third largest importer with the share of 9% in Poland's total exports: 112,000 tons, 6.7 times as high as in the same period of the previous season, with up to 80% of them to have been re-exported to Russia through Crimea.

We would remind you that Russia has previously been the largest importer of Polish apples and accounted for the share of almost a half in Poland's total apple exports.

More detailed information about the Eastern European apple market developments will be presented at the 5th International Conference «Apple Business of Ukraine-2015», which is going to take place on August 13-14, Kleopatra Hotel, Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Ukraine.
